What to do

Recently there has been a proliferation in the building of hotels, inns, apartelle's and bed and breakfast rooms in Tagaytay. Most however, do not provide the exhilarating views that a room overlooking Taal Lake and the volcano offers.

There is a decent supply of hotels, inn's or apartelle's overlooking Taal volcano ... IF you're willing and able to pay the price. The world famous Days Inn charges plus or minus US$100 for ONE night for two people only for their overlooking rooms. Their other rooms are a wee bit less expensive, but if you come all the way to Tagaytay you should insist on an OVERLOOKING room of Taal volcano regardless where you stay! Admittedly the Days Inn lives up to its excellent reputation, but for Tagaytay and the Philippines we don't feel you receive value for this kind of money.

The Taal Vista Hotel has some of their rooms overlooking Taal volcano with outstanding views. As of this writing the hotel reopened after an extensive and very costly renovation. When we stayed there, just before they closed for rehab, the rooms were way too expensive, more than US$100 per night, and that was with the hotel deserted! Their new published rates start at Php 4,950. Not very good value for your money in our opinion.

Until recently, the least expensive overlooking rooms we located in Tagaytay cost Pesos 5,000, i.e. more than US$100 per night. This is way beyond the reach of most Filipinos and in our option, doesn't represent good value for visitors to the Philippines and especially Tagaytay. And that price was for two adults and NO children. Families and their children must be kept in mind at all times when planning vacations and short getaways. Otherwise a hoped for weekend getaway will turn out to be a stressful and unhappy event.

We firmly believe that the Philippines best chance of economic recovery is through tourism, both international and domestic. At today's prices, most Filipino's haven't a chance of enjoying the best the Philippines has to offer, i.e. places like Tagaytay, Boracay, El Nino, etc. For first time visitors to the Philippines, they may be put off by prices that in our option, doesn't reflect true value for their money when compared to other Asian cities.

If you can get a deluxe room in Bangkok for US$60 per night, why shouldn't you be able to do the same thing in the Philippines or even better?

Intuitive entrepreneurs decided to do something about this, and in fact go one better! They were determined to offer deluxe rooms, at a brand new inn, with spectacular views overlooking Taal Lake and volcano at from US$55 per night! (At current exchange rate.)

ENTER the Royal Taal Inn.

The idea started more than 15 years ago when a small family of entrepreneurs first visited Tagaytay and fell in love with the serene surroundings and astonishing views all characterized by the absence of emotional agitation and free from disturbance. Add in the cool clean air and a sparsely populated city and one has practically found paradise!

The first obstacle to overcome was the outrageous land prices at the time, around US$400 and UP per square meter for a decent size lot overlooking the beautiful Taal Lake and volcano. The Asian financial crisis of 1997-98 solved that problem when the peso halved in value in relation to the US dollar. That made land acquisition affordable, though we still feel that land and property prices in general (in the more desirable locations throughout the Philippines) are still too high.

However as with all real estate, it's always, location, location, location. Like the great American humorist and actor Will Rogers said about land decades ago, "They ain 't making anymore of it!"

After more than seven years and countess trips to Tagaytay, searching, haggling, researching and looking at more than 100 properties, this small family of entrepreneurs hit the jackpot. They located a large parcel of land overlooking Taal Lake and volcano at a fair price. Their location, admittedly, has one of the most inspirational and uplifting views I've seen in all my travels, and I've been to nearly a hundred countries during the last 40years!

To wake up in the morning and see the sun set overlooking Taal Lake and volcano was an experience I'll never forget. You won't either if you make the time and effort to participate in such an experience.

Taal Lake and Volcano at sunset!

There is a cornucopia of hotels, inns, apartelle's and bed and breakfast rooms to rent in Tagaytay and throughout the Philippines, with prices ranging from a few dollars per night to over US$400 for the super luxury resorts. Conduct a search at goggle, the world famous search engine, for "Philippines hotels", and you'll find more offers than you can shake a stick at.

However the Royal Taal stands heads and shoulders above all the rest. Why? Because the Royal Taal offers the best overlooking rooms in Tagaytay at rock bottom prices ... starting from US$55 per night, (pesos 2,750, ) each and every room at the Royal Taal has a spectacular view overlooking the Taal Volcano.

Enjoying a cup of coffee on a crisp morning, or a cup of tea overlooking Taal volcano during a speculator sunset on your own private porch, will become one of your more memorable travel treasures.

In order for this family run business to offer overlooking rooms at knock down prices, they had to limit the number of guest rooms available. So it's strictly first come, first served on availability and at US$55 and up per night the rooms go very fast.

Each guest room has all the modern conveniences, i.e. telephone, TV and your own private comfort room , which is the local lingo for "rest or bath room." Each comfort room comes with a shower, toilet and sink with very impressive titles. Each room has air cond, as the locals call it (better known as air conditioning,) but you'll rarely if ever use it. The large windows and doors, all screened, offers a breeze during the night, which at times requires a blanket to keep you warm.

The surprisingly large rooms, for the money, sleeps two adults and two children, a rare event in today's holiday industry. There's even Internet access available if required.

Though the Royal Taal doesn't have a restaurant, (another way they keep the cost down,) you can have morning breakfast in the families kitchen, and order snacks and sandwich's until late evening time. Soda's, long distance telephone calling cards, DVD player and DVD movies are also available, all at a small extra cost.

Probably the best perk of all is the friendly, efficient and warm hospitality this family run business offers. You feel more like you're at home or your best friends place, rather than staying at an Inn. The family goes way beyond being helpful offering to arrange transportation, reservations and suggesting "to do" recommendations during your stay. What a refreshing change from the run of the mill business establishments nowadays.
